We have all heard about the stigma around mental health. There are commercials every day about depression or mental illness, but what is mental illness in the 21st century? We are told that mental illness will indirectly impact our lives through a family member, friend or colleague. Did you know that suicide is among the leading causes of death in 15-24 year old, second only to accidents? That 20% of Canadians will personally experience depression in our life time. ("Fast")These are just some of the facts that are presented to us everyday. The main mental illness that people are told about is DEPRESSION. Depression can hit anyone at anytime in their life, could be in school or later in life. It hits both females and males all around the world everyday. It can be a chemical imbalance in the brain, situational or environmental. There are physical and emotional symptoms that debilitate so many people. The main way that is used to help people with depression is various drug therapy's, talk therapy and life style changes. This is one of the ways that the 21st century is different than the Medieval or Elizabethan times, back then you were locked up in an asylum and most likely tortured until you complied. There are more drastic therapy's for mental illness or depression but are saved as a last resort.
